The substantial increase in publicity associated with last year’s Art Show resulted in the 2011 event being the most successful for many years, both in the number of visitors attending and in the numbers and value of paintings sold and we aim to make the 2012 Exhibition equally successful.

THE FREDERICK McCUBBIN MEDAL AWARD

The Frederick McCubbin Medal Award for the Best Work in the Show will be presented to the winning artist at the Art Show’s Opening Function and the selected painting will be a feature of the Exhibition and available for purchase during the show. Initiated by the Rotary Club of Box Hill in 1994, the McCubbin Medal Award has grown in artistic importance year by year and reflects the efforts of the club to maintain the highest possible standards of Art exhibited at the Show.

The late Frederick McCubbin, who was born in Melbourne on 25th February, 1855 and died in South Yarra on 20thn December, 1917, was one of the founders of the Heidelberg School of Artists. His career encompassed teaching of drawing at the Melbourne National Gallery School for thirty-one years, 1886-1917, President of the Australian Artists Association, 1912, and President of the Victorian Artists Society, 1893, 1902-1904, 1908-1909 and 1911-1912.

Frederick McCubbin, a resident of the local district for many years, was a genial, uncomplicated man who had neither the forceful organising character of Tom Roberts nor the gnawing ambition of his other intimate friend, Arthur Streeton. When Tom Roberts returned from his overseas trip in 1885 he, together with Frederick McCubbin, Arthur Streeton Charles Conder, Louis Abrahams and other artists founded the first of the Artists Camps at Box Hill and thus were laid the foundations of the Heidelberg School of Artists.

In 1994, the Rotary Club of Box Hill inaugurated the “Frederick McCubbin Medal Award” in honour of the significant link Box Hill has with art and the foundations of the Heidelberg School.

The Rotary Club of Box Hill is indebted to the McCubbin family members for enabling us to honour the memory of the late Frederick McCubbin in presenting the Frederick McCubbin Medal Award for the best work in the Annual Box Hill Art Show thus reflecting the Club’s efforts to maintain the highest possible standards of Art.

THE HERITAGE 9″ X 5″ AWARD

Again this year, the Rotary Club of Box Hill has invited artists to exhibit work in the style used by early Australian artists. This section of 9”x5” paintings celebrates the impressionistic works painted on the present site of the Box Hill Golf Club. Known as the 9”x5” art form the works are about the size of an old cigar box lid which, at the time, was the best material the struggling artists could find for their early work.

In presenting “The Heritage Award” during the Exhibition, the Rotary Club of Box Hill commemorates the work of the early painters, particularly the first exhibition by the famous artist, Tom Roberts. In conjunction with the Arts & Technology Department of the Box Hill Institute of TAFE, the Rotary Club of Box Hill will again present the Stoll Trust Award, which encourages the work of young artists.

The 48th Box Hill Art Show is not to be missed!

It offers the chance to view the varied styles of the artists invited to enter – watercolours, oils and pastels – and opportunities for all visitors to purchase a painting.

The Annual Rotary Art Show is a major fundraising activity of the Rotary Club of Box Hill with the funds raised being directed this year to EVOLVE - “Keeping Kids on Track” – to assist this valuable organisation in its wonderful work of supporting disadvantaged youth.

The Art Show is the largest in the City of Whitehorse and provides an excellent opportunity for the serious art lover and casual observer alike to experience quality art works, well presented in the character of the Box Hill Town Hall.
